Film Fascinations.
So this is something I have yet to do here but is something I like doing, talking about films and thoughts on them. This Film Fascinations is particualrly about favourite parts, themes endings etc but will also no doubt mention other things as I digress so please be awary you may read something you may prefer to of read after watching the relevant film, if you have not already.
First let us start with X-men First class.
When I first saw the posters and gained the knowledge of said film, I was wary. I always love X-men films and I did not think it would be rubbish or anything negative really, just because it was with a new set of actors. However Ian Mckellen is Magneto. Patrick Stewart is Xavier. I can adjust to things easily often so it was not that but I was not sure how this was going to work and also the first few minutes of the film had me confused as to whether this really would be an X-men film at all. However that all ended.
.. is him to.. is magnet too..avier..
"I prefer....Magneto."
Why was it so wrong to have Xavier chatting up girls (Hold on I will explain why he was) ? Why not show how Xavier before he was Professor X? It did work, yes it did. All of the films are good, this is how this one was. It told the story before the story. With their own unique take, no doubt drawing from some comics and maybe other media, we had a retelling of earlier days. I had always been interested by the Nazi storyline, knowing Magneto was somehow connected and how he had ended up being held prisoner, here you find out what happened and how he begins to hate Shaw and ultimately want to kill
him for him killing his mother and playing games with him.
So as I said I would explain, earlier on, Xavier did not just stop fighting..say "Emma Frost" mid-battle and say "My you look hot today" (Odd expression for a cold person...). No, this was Charles much younger in a different world, no battles between "Mutants" and mutants, or Mutants and humans, no school to run as refuge for those deemed "Mutants" and cast aside. You even get to see him with a young Mystique. Oh yes! Apparently they were friends together. Unfortunately I haven't read any of the comics for a while so I don't know if this was ever in original material, hopefully I can track down some both old and new ones alike somewhere.
"We are brothers you and I. We want the same thing."
"No my friend. We most certainly do not."
Fast forward to the ending. This is what called for the title "Film Fascinations." Yes there was a big kinda battle at the end. Yes there was sadness mixed in so you may say it was a "normal" ending which does not mean anything negative. However I see something different. This was the film that set up or promised to set up the story, a prequel to the others and it did in the end. As Charles desperately tries to stop Eric (Magneto) from destroying Soviet Union and American warships with their own missiles now turned against them, one of Charles own comrades accidentally indirectly shoots him, as Eric himself indirectly shoots him as he being the one who deflected the bullet that she had been aiming for him. As Charles fell to the ground I am sure some of us guessed where this was going however new to X-men or not it was still brilliant. Of course Eric may be blind and arrogant but he was a friend all the same and rushed to Charles's aid. This was one of my favourite moments and what gives a feel of a different ending, maybe because it is merely the beginning of a long chapter but still a stand alone film at the same time if you want to watch it as one. They were now of course going to go their seperate ways with Eric making sure Charles had someone to take care of him. He gestured to Charles on the ground to make his point. Mutants would not be tolerated by this world, this society. We must wage war on "Humans." For Charles had said to him moments before that they do not want the same thing and maybe Eric got it at last.
It was great seeing Eric become Magneto and Charles become Xavier, Proffessor X not alone by becoming paralyzed and wearing a helmet to block out telepathy, respectively, but by becoming aware of ones own ideals and each others.
That is all for today! I hope you enjoyed :)
